-------------------------------

I posted a few pictures from my short trip in Ottawa on our Flickr album. I wanted to have a picture of Clémentine but since I'm trying to attract reader ship, I figured nothing beats an intense smile. Thanks Paloma.
The link to our Flickr album is on the right of the Blog. You need to be registered on Flickr an added as a family of friend to see them. WE ROCK!!! We know a radio Star in Japan!!!! (and I married her!)... Haha! Who else knows someone on National radio in Japan, huh? huh?
Yeah thats what I thought, NO ONE!! Mwuahahahahha!!!!!!

Ehem.. right... As I was saying, our own Crista McInnis was on NHK Radio (the equivalent of CBC or Radio Canada in Japan) about two weeks ago for an interview on Canada. They talked about what Crista likes in Japan, Japanese culture, Canadian food, maple sirup, ice wine and so on. About half-way through the show the interviewer asked Crista to choose some groovy Canadian music, she made an excellent choice with the Bedouin Soundclash's "When The Night Feels My Song" If you like it, here's the link to their website. We saw them in concert in Tokyo a few months ago and they gave a great show.

By the way, not that anyone would doubt it, but Crista's Japanese is something to be reckoned with, I was truly impressed with her Nihongo (japanese) abilities in the interview. Not only does she sound fluent as all heck, she also sounds very classy. But don't take my word for it, the proof in the pudding is that she is getting gifts from Japanese admirers sent to the embassy. No joke. The word can be used in a sentence such as: ``Sasaki san is a foodie, therefore he is my friend, Tanaka san on the other hand does not enjoy food, what a boring chump``

Here is the Wikipedia definition:
___________________________________________________
Foodie is often used by the media as a conversational synonym for gourmet. The word was coined synchronously by Gael Greene and by Paul Levy and Ann Barr, co-authors of The Official Foodie Handbook (1984). But there are important distinctions to be made between the two terms. Some gourmets would not consider themselves foodies and many foodies would not consider themselves gourmets. A foodie might easily get caught up in a taco hunt—a search for the best taco stands and trucks in an area. But this would not be an adventure for a gourmet, strictly speaking. Generally speaking, a foodie is a person who has a special interest in food, even foods that a self-identified gourmet would turn his or her nose up at.
___________________________________________________

The great thing about foodies is that they tend to be happy laid back people, and even if they have no conversational skills, you can always sit down with a foodie and enjoy a good meal in silence, smiling, because it tastes so darn good...

In front of an old Ryokan in Komoro, originally uploaded by pabloberlanga.

Here they demonstrate the fantastic abilities of a japanese student of the english language.

This is typical of late night TV shows here. The "students" are actually all very well known comedians and the setup is that they have to listen to this guy practice English but cannot laugh or they can he cane. (Nathan knows something about that, as do I...)

The funny part is that english really is very hard for the Japanese and you do here this kind of stuff fairly regularly.

The Blog is back!!!

Fish knives (swords more like), originally uploaded by pabloberlanga.

Ok, we have got ourselves a new IMac 24". For those of you who are not bilingual... They say pictures are worth a thousand words, so we setup a pro account on www.flickr.com for your viewing pleasure.

So we will be posting articles here, and will be letting you know when we have new pictures for you to see on flickr. Some fishmonger ask the kids if they wanted to hold these huge tuna knives... Why I call these knives, I don`t know, no samurai ever wielded such deadly weapons... In a moment of temporary insanity, I let my 6 and 9 year old hold these things. Incredibly, no one was hurt and we got a very cool photo so all is well.

More tsukiji pictures in the picture gallery on Flickr.

A Week of Firsts

Well, we knew that we would be in for a lot of firsts: moving to a new country, starting new jobs, going to new schools and many others. So, in short, here is a list of some of our firsts from this week:

August 30th: first lunch at the Official residence. After about one month at the Embassy, I had my first lunch at the Ambassador’s Residence. Formal, with place names, and a printed menu and a full agenda, I busied myself eating with my formal manners, taking notes of the conversation and generally enjoying the interesting job that I am fortunate enough to have!

August 31st: First earthquake. 4.7 on the Richter Scale; 4.0 on the Japanese scale (and they know what they’re talking about); epicenter Yokohama (20km away from Tokyo); as for our take on it- Crista “I heard a big bang and felt one sharp drop. After that the building (the Embassy which is built on rollers or something similar to absorb the shock of an earthquake- the shocks do not feel as strong but it moves slightly for quite a while afterwards) swayed for about a minute. The swaying made me feel a little car-sick, but otherwise it was ok.” Pablo, Jeremie and Manu: “There was an earthquake?? We were in the pool and didn’t feel anything!” At home: Nothing fell off the walls or fell over, but a few of our photos advanced towards the edge of the bookcases they were lodged in. The feeling around Tokyo: “Oh good, it was about time we had an earthquake!” All in all: we are happy to have the first one under our belt, we will be heading out to the earthquake training centre soon, and are getting our quake kits on Monday!

Sept 1st: First Reception. After a full day of wondering what I should wear to a reception on board a friggate, I settled on a suit and headed off for my first reception. I was a little nervous, I had a few contacts that I had invited, but until they got there the only people that I knew were my colleagues- all of whom had guests of their own that they were talking with. Once my guests arrived, I was happy to show them around the HMCS Regina, introduce them to the Canadian sailors aboard, and show them to the Canadian kitchen party that we had organized. All in all it was a fun evening, and I found out that a suit is totally appropriate to wear on board a Canadian friggate if ever you need to go to a reception!!

Sept 1st: First Contract. Pablo took the long train ride out to Nissan for his first contract with his new company. The day was interesting- allot of interaction with a team of engineers looking to improve their performance in English. They worked on lots of drills to improve arguing a point, interjection, negotiating, describing etc. At the end of the day, in typical Japanese fashion, Pablo, his colleagues and their Japanese students went out to a bar for a nomikai, a “drinking meeting”. My culturally sensitive husband joined in for a couple of beers, but mostly enjoyed the company of his students and marveled at how different their personalities seemed from earlier in the day. Later on, after a look to his watch, Pablo realized that if they didn’t leave immediately, they would have to take a very expensive 2 hour car ride back into the city!!!! With his palm pilot in tow (he has a map of all of the Tokyo trains on it) he managed to get everyone back to downtown Tokyo before the last train!!

Sept 4th: First day of Homesick. Well, it’s official- it wouldn’t be a trans-oceanic move without a little homesickness. I think that after a month of meeting new colleagues, seeing families arrive and leave, getting the boys settled in, finding out where to buy our groceries etc. I finally started to feel lonesome for things that are familiar, people that I know and am already comfortable with, and a place where I feel comfortable. It kind of felt as though I was “on” all the time. After a couple of days I felt, better, but I can see now that it is hitting the boys! Our little ones who are happy when they are swimming in the Embassy pool and running around the Embassy ground, have been a little upset now that a new routine, with new friends, and a new school have shown up on the scene.

Sept: 5 First day of School: Tuesday arrived and off we all went to meet Jeremie and Manu’s new teachers, and see what classes they would be in. The boys were excited to see the inside of their school, and to hear about how delicious the menu is going to be all year long!! After finding their teachers and getting in line with their classmates it was time for Mom and Dad to leave. Later that day, at about 3:30 we went back to pick them up. As expected lots of things are different at a new school, but the saddest one for the little ones as their first day wrapped up, and as the temperature reached 35 degrees, is the fact that there was no water fountain anywhere in the school!!!! Needless to say the first thing on our list of things to do that day was to get these boys a celebratory back to school drink, and buy them a big water bottle to carry back and forth to school!

Sept 6: First day on the bus!!! WOW WOW WOW!!!! What a bus!! These guys go to school in style!!! We went down to the stop to wait for the bus, and after a five minute wait what did we see but a navy blue coach pulling up towards us, with individual seats, curtains, and everything!!! The boys stepped up, and a few seconds later they were on their way!! At the end of the day, we were happy to see them home safe and sound. The only thing is, poor Manu missed the bus…. at least at first he did!! After school is over, the boys come down from their classrooms, and head out towards the exit (you have to know that the entrance and exit to the school is a narrow gated courtyard that is overflowing with parents, nannies and preschoolers waiting for the school children to exit). The street in front of the entrance, though, is so narrow that the parents can’t move out of the way even to let the children exit. Needless to say, there is more than a little bit of confusion at the end of each day.

Well, following all of this confusion, the bus supervisor counts to make sure that each of the kids are present and accounted for. On the first day, she realized that she was missing four children. Since the street is so narrow, though, she couldn’t have the bus park out front to wait. So while the bus with all of the other children circled around the school, she went on the hunt for the ‘missing’ kids. She found them, as the bus came around the corner. They got on the bus and left…. Only to find out that they still did not have Manu!! Jeremie had come up to the front to let her know, she called the school and found out that indeed poor Manu was sitting in the principal’s office crying, and the bus rounded back again to the school to collect their little passenger!!! Manu now pays very close attention to where the bus is!!

Well there are certainly more firsts in store for us, but now that everyone is settling in to their new routines, maybe things will settle down for a while!!

Love you all!! Crista, Pablo, Jeremie and Manu!!

Jeremie’s B day- on the Town!!

Who ever said you could only have one birthday a year? Well, of course, if you are talking about REAL birthday’s that’s correct, but if your parents are dragging you to the other side of the planet and you are saying good-bye to friends, grand-parents, cousins etc. You might be forgiven for clocking in a few extra parties (not to mention presents). It also means that if your real birthday happens to be just after you have arrived in your new country, you might again be forgiven, despite the many earlier parties, of having just one more!

Such was the case for M. Jeremie Berlanga, in the celebration of his ninth birthday!

So what does a nine year old do to ring in a new year in the big city, you ask? Well, let me enlighten you! Naturally it involves some kind of over-rich, over sweet delicacy, a dinner of one’s favorite food, and some entertainment. In Tokyo this translated into the following very sweet and very fun afternoon.

We began things at our new favorite family restaurant, La Pausa, a little family Italian eatery that has great pizza, pasta, tiramisu, coffee, and Jeremie’s new favorite dessert- a custard, chocolate banana pizza! (For the record it also is home to Manu’s new favorite dessert: a vanilla, caramel ice cream sundae with about 1 cup of fresh whipped cream, drizzled chocolate overtop and two wafer cookies stuck in for good measure!!!!)

With our bellies full, and another dessert still ahead of us, we set out to satisfy the entertainment portion of our celebration. In the city of flashing lights, bling bling, rattle and bang etc. what better way to celebrate than to hit an arcade!! And so we did. Mom, Dad , little brother, everyone – we played Mario Kart, Naruto, Kabuto Mushi, Taiko Drums, Can Mom Beat Dad at the Game Where You Have to Solve Problems Faster Than the Other Person (by the way, yes she can…). Movies were made, pictures were taken and fun was had by all.

Before heading home to sleep off our sugar high, we naturally had to let the boys indulge in one more treat- and what a treat!!!! In Japan, if you follow the Harajuku girls (explanation to follow in another blog) for a while you will eventually walk past a stall where you will be enticed by a delicious smell, and prompted to investigate what could produce such an aroma. A glance at the display window will reveal an assortment of crepes filled with a multitude of delicious fillings ranging from butter and sugar all the way to cheese cake, ice cream, whipped cream, strawberries and chocolate.

Hard to imagine that the boys would have fallen asleep easily after so much sugar, but they did, and our very fun day (and the fifth birthday party we celebrated this summer for Jeremie) quickly became a happy memory!

Sushi!

Sumimasen, inarizushi nimai onegaishimasu!.... Tordant….

Le film est à la fin de l'article.

English version coming real soon. We ate in a beautiful chinese restaurant on the 42nd floor of the Mitsui building in Shinjuku, in the heart of Tokyo. You can see the building (the black one) on the picture here. He is american, has lived in Japan for nearly 20 years, speaks flawless Japanese and studied philosophy and sociology at Sophia University in Tokyo, a very interesting guy. After about a two hour lunch, he offered me to work as a consultant for his firm. The job consists in creating bridges between the east and west. The clients are Japanese corporations wanting to train their employees to better communicate with their western counter-parts in business contexts. It looks like a very interesting job (and it pays well....)I start on Monday, I will keep you posted...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://adventuresjapan.blogspot.com/2006/08/du-boulot-job.html' title='Pablo à un boulot! Not before we had given them all kinds of instructions and reminders. “Remember, you want to go to Yamaya… you won’t have to cross the big street… it’s right by where we take the metro all of the time….” They set off like two confident adventurers on a quest that might leave them with enough money to buy a few treats, and vowed to be right back. And so we waited… 5min, 10 min, 15 min, 20min… soon I had to be back at work so I decided to wander out after them and escort them back home. Except that I didn’t see them, and on my way back when I asked the Embassy security guard, he hadn’t seen them either. By the time I rushed back to the apartment to let Pablo know that our early experiment had been a mistake, I walked into the house only to find that Jeremie and Manu had safely returned home! “What happened? How did you guys get home?” I quickly enquired. “We just walked here.” answered Manu. “Tell her the whole story.” interjected Pablo, and there it began! It turns out that while our boys started on the right path to the convenience store located two blocks away from our home, they somehow got sidetracked and ended up on the main street that leads to the Embassy. Someway down this metropolitan boulevard, Manu had some inclination that they might be lost and began to cry. Jeremie, however, reassured him that HE knew where they were going. You will be happy to note, however, that the plight of a young boy crying, even if he is accompanied by a confident older brother, does not go unnoticed in the vibrant metropolis that is Tokyo! A young man walked over to the two boys and asked them if everything was OK. Manu explained that they were lost, while Jeremie reassured the Samaritan that he had everything under control. “We’re Canadian!” interjected Manu in despair. “So am I.” answered the kindly fellow. “Where are your parents? What are you doing here?” “We need to buy Orange Juice, and I have money.” answered Jeremie. “Well, you can buy Orange Juice at the AM PM,” answered the man pointing in the direction of a general store. From there, Jeremie assured the young man that he did indeed have control of the situation. He thanked him for his help, and he and Manu went to make their purchase. When they asked the attendant where they could find the Orange Juice, Jeremie showed him his money, and the man explained that they could buy two bottles. The boys, anxious to make sure that they wouldn’t be overburdened on their return trip, decided to only buy one bottle. They returned home without incident, although, Manu does not seem too keen to make any further forays on his own in the big city for a little while…. Until Pablo pointed out that maybe next time, he could buy a treat!

Long Lost English Correspondent

After a few complaints from our viewing public about the dearth of English language content, your delinquent English correspondent has broken free from the confines of her office to update you on the family's trip to Thailand and their recent adventures in Japan.... Thai people consider themselves lucky when one moves into their house as a single gecko can eat every mosquito in the house in a matter of hours. The bad side of it is that the males love to show off their mating calls all night. We had a fat one in our little hut on Koh Samed island, here he is.

<st1:metricconverter productid="2 litres" st="on">2 litres</st1:metricconverter> d’eau

Koh Samet, Ko Samet, Koh Samed, Ko Samed, no matter how you spell it the result is the same- a charming Island paradise nestled into the Gulf of Thailand! After three days in Bangkok where we slowly recovered from our jet lag, walked around the city and ate a lot of fabulous food, we made our way out to Ban Phe, a surf city located about 200km outside of Bangkok. Well actually, we made our way out to a small off season surf beach just outside of Ban Phe, where we would take the ferry on the nest day out to Koh Samet.

While visiting exotic locations in the low season can have great benefits, lower costs, more privacy, less tourists etc., it can also produce some rather startling results. Let me explain! After taking a mini bus out to the region of Ban Phe, we explained to our driver that we wanted to get off at a hotel that was near to the pier as we had an early morning ferry to catch. He seemed to understand by this that we needed to do groceries and dropped us off in the parking lot of what looked like a large supermarket. Figuring that he had done this because we would find a cab that could take us more easily to a hotel, we disembarked.

There were no cabs that we could see, however, so Pablo very nicely spoke to a man who drove a sort of converted flat-bed truck that doubles as a sort of bus for commuters in the region. We explained to him what we wanted and he seemed to understand so we climbed in to the back of the truck and made our way.

After a little too long in the back of his truck, however, we wondered if he hadn’t misunderstood! We tapped on the window and using the words from the back of our guidebook, said again that we were looking for a hotel outside of Ban Phe- this time we could see that he understood. He turned around and within about five minutes he drove up to a beautiful white stucco hotel right on the beach, and explained that the pier was a 5 min walk from here.

Delighted with our hotel, we went inside to get a room for the night, and then to head out to the beach where we saw a few little restaurants waiting for us! The clerk was pretty helpful, and we got signed in without any wait. He took our bags and began walking in front of us to lead us up to our room. As we passed through a completely empty dinning room and lobby (I mean empty, with no lights on and no sign of any other guests) we started to think that we might have come during the wrong season. This impression was confirmed when we got up to our room on the fourth floor, and the clerk had to turn on the lights FOR THE WHOLE FLOOR before he could show us where our room was.

We got to our room, which was clean enough, and he brought our bags in for us. After he left, we noticed that it smelled a little musty, so we decided to open up our windows. As we pulled back the curtains, we noticed that the walls were more or less evenly covered with a light dusting of bright green mold! The combination of it being hot and humid, next to the sea, and in low season (so the air conditioning was always turned off) had encouraged the growth of the mold…. Oh well! It was too late to go any where else, and we knew that we still had to eat, and that we had an early departure the next day so we decided that we could handle the mold-palace for one night, and head out as quickly as possible for the longest dinner of our whole trip!

Our accommodations in Koh Samet were absolutely beautiful, though, and I think that we enjoyed our three days on the beach even more for having had an adventure in getting there!
I will add a little more to this post in a bit, but for now, have a look at the movie that Pablo put together, and you will have an idea of how much we enjoyed our time in Koh Samet!

Enfin Internet!

Sayonara!

Boy, a few days without the internet is all it takes to show this family to HOW addicted they are to the World Wide Web!!! Almost three weeks cold, turkey… but we survived, and managed to understand how to get the internet hooked up in our apartment in Tokyo!!

Thailand was really wonderful, and the whole family benefitted from some quiet time together on the beach and in Bangkok. The food, which is always very important for all of us as you well know, was fantastic. Indeed, you will see a post a little later on that Pablo has devoted to his food enthusiast sister that is all about the great food that we had in Thailand.

Our first week in Tokyo was all about getting as set up as we could, first with our luggage, then as our air shipment arrived, and finally now that our sea shipment is here. The people at Canada Court (the green courtyard behind the Embassy populated with Canadians working at the Embassy and their families and the place we know call home) have been really great to us: showing us around, playing with the kids, bringing us out to find the inexpensive grocery spots… all kinds of things. In addition to helping us get to know our new neighborhood a little, they have also helped us with the basics of modern life: the aforementioned internet (Hurrah!), cable (our kids can’t stop telling us how great Japan is- they even get to watch TV…. We haven’t shown them how to change the programming to English though, so little do they know this is actually a ploy by their cunning parents to try to expose them to as much Japanese as possible…).

Last Friday, Lisa, our nanny, moved in! Pablo and I were just as excited as the boys. We met Lisa while she was still working with Louise and Peter, and their two boys Pearson and Maxime. Lisa had been with them for seven years, so you can imagine the teary goodbye! We know that we are really going to enjoy having Lisa with us- she is very sweet and friendly, and is really wonderful with the boys.

Slowly but surely we have been getting out and about to make the purchases that we need to settle in – rice maker (totally essential in Japan as you can imagine), some cleaning supplies, food etc. We haven’t been in a big rush to break in the kitchen, though. Eating out in Japan is surprisingly inexpensive (especially given the cost of the ingredients!) and the variety is unimaginable- apparently they are over 80 000 restaurants in Tokyo alone, over 100 000 if you include the surrounding area!!!!

Settling into work has gone well so far, though I had to jump into things right away. Right now the Economic section is made up of my boss and I and no one else and until my finance colleague returns from his trip, and until my foreign affairs colleague arrives from Ottawa, I am following everything (or at least reading everything!).

As for the boys, they made friends with Pearson and Maxime and played with them right up until the boys had to leave Tokyo. They have also met Takumi and Sayaka, two kids who live upstairs. You may remember that they met three brothers in Ottawa who are also moving out to Tokyo this summer, and they are anxiously awaiting their arrival!

Pablo has been having lots of adventures with the kids, as we get settled in. He has been bringing them all over Tokyo and trying to show them the parts of the city that are most likely to impress them- Shinjuku, Shibuya and all of the other bright light places that he can think of. Meanwhile, he has lined up an interview with a consulting company that has cultural training contracts with big Japanese firms- Nissan, Toyota, Coca Cola Japan etc… We will let you know how it goes.

As far as the weather goes, we had a couple of really hot and humid days when we arrived, but generally it has been fairly rainy since we got here (the tail end of the rainy season we are told). Don’t feel too bad for us though, since everyone keeps telling us that this kind of weather is great for us to get to know Tokyo in. They keep insisting that once the real summer heat hits, we will not at all feel like going outside!

Before I wrap up this post, let me quickly explain the pictures that Pablo posted up above: Jeremie hacking into the computer located in front of him on the plane; kids of the new generation “playing” together at the airport; our first meal in Japan as we transit through Narita on our way to Bangkok; Manu with a hot belly on the plane….

More photos to come!

Love always, Crista, Pablo, Jeremie and Manu!!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://adventuresjapan.blogspot.com/2006/07/enfin-internet-enfin-des-nouvelles.html' title='Enfin Internet! The Thais are a very warm people who are very good to children- the boys received allot attention while we were there and never lacked for partners to play soccer with on the beach. Pablo will be uploading pictures and movies when we arrive in Tokyo on the 19th. So far the whole family has been enjoying the Thai adventure and the boys have been keeping a list of modes of transportation that we have used since leaving Ottawa- they include train; plane; taxi; tuk-tuk; minibus; open bus; ferry; 4x4 extreme jungle taxi... we are waiting to add a few more to the list.

Love you all, and looking forwrad to writing you again soon!
Crista, Pablo, Jeremie and Manu!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://adventuresjapan.blogspot.com/2006/07/petite-note-partir-dun-cafe-internet.html' title='Petite note a partir d'un cafe internet en Thailand. After 31 hours of travel (give or take an hour) we arrived at our hotel yesterday, safe and sound. The kids were fantastic all through the "longest day in the world" (quoth Jeremie), and happy to have stopped over, albeit quickly, in Tokyo. Today we enjoyed Bangkok a little, thanks to our knowledgable Tuk Tuk driver. Pablo will post a few pictures of the Tuk Tuk and some sites from around the capital later. Tomorrow we will make our way out to Ko Samet, so you wil not hear from us for a few days, but rest assured that we are happy and safe and thinking of all of you!!
